Released in 1987, Jesu Mbo was Dupe Olulana’s (@modupefeliciaolulana ) debut album and the beginning of a solo recording career that would grow considerably over the decades that followed. Produced by her husband and longtime musical partner, Kola Olulana, the eight-track LP took its title from “Jesu Mbo.” . Her journey in gospel music, however, had begun before the album. Born Felicia Modupe Olulana, she trained as a nurse and graduated in 1981, but music increasingly became a major part of her life. She sang with The Assurance Voices, where she met Kola Olulana, who would later become her husband, producer and manager. . With Jesu Mbo, that journey moved into her solo recording career. The record was released through Hosanna Promotion Limited, the label behind the release. It was followed by albums including Oba Ni Jesu in 1988, Oluseun in 1989, Jesus Na Correct in 1990, Ime La in 1991 and Holy Ghost Conga in 1992. . Her catalogue continued to grow through the 1990s and 2000s. By 2003, she was reported to have recorded 16 albums, singing not only in Yoruba and English but also in Igbo, Pidgin, French and other African languages. Her music and performances also reached audiences beyond Nigeria, including other parts of West Africa, Europe, Canada and the United States. . Decades after Jesu Mbo, Dupe Olulana continues to hold her place among the veteran figures of Nigerian gospel music. In 2025, she was among the longstanding gospel artistes honoured at Yinka Alaseyori’s Celebrating the Legends event in Lagos, alongside Ebenezer Obey, Bola Are, Funmi Aragbaiye, Joseph Adelakun and Deborah Fasoyin, among others. . From that 1987 LP to a recording career spanning several decades, “Jesu Mbo” takes us back to an early part of a musical journey that has travelled far beyond where it began. . . . #NostalgicSunday #80sMusic #GospelMusic #SundayMood #ChildhoodMemories
