I developed trichotillomania in 3rd grade. Within days of my diagnosis, which was a humiliating process itself, everyone in my school knew because my mom had to cry about it with the church prayer group. She gave them her best boomer tears with a heavy dose of “I’m the worst mother” to center herself in my deeply personal, deeply debilitating condition.

I called in sick and my partner was taking care of me at their place. My employer called my home instead of me, and my mom gossiped private info, said that I was probably skipping work and wasn’t home so couldn’t be sick and didn’t seem sick when I left. Nearly lost my job, was written up, and was a black mark on my record for all of my coworkers who treated me differently going forwards. Outside of “oh you’re just embarrassed”, it also had real world consequences that took years to recover from.

When I had a miscarriage my mom immediately told everyone she knew. My MIL made a point to tell me that she wasn’t going to tell anyone bc it wasn’t her business to tell. She has always had my respect since then, and I have a better relationship with her than I do with my own mom.

(We don’t live in the same province) I didn’t want my entire extended family to hear about my issues. She tells me everything about my cousins, no matter how many times I’ve told her… if they wanted me to know, they’d tell me

During a conversation with an older family member at thanksgiving about why I don’t post pictures of my toddler online, I said “I don’t want him to be embarrassed by them one day.” This family member said “embarrassing your kids is half the fun of parenting.” Both of her kids were at their in-laws’ for Thanksgiving but that’s probably a coincidence
