I’ve been reading about US involvement in Guatemala and it is infuriating. Guatemala’s left wing government pulled millions out of poverty, increased literacy rates and granted rights to women and indigenous people, before being overthrown by the CIA and replaced by a series of right wing dictatorships beginning in 1954.

The same thing happened in Guatemala in 1954 with the infamous "Banana wars" when the US staged a CIA backed coup that overthrew the democratically elected president Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán. Fun fact: before the "banana wars" took place, the Guatemalan currency (Quetzal) had more value than the dollar!

I love my country born and raised here and no better place in the world for ME. But if we could help these countries so the poor people don’t flee and instead could have a better life there, it would be a win for everyone involved the people and the economy. The amount of money we rather spend keeping people out could be used to help them stay there.
