My kids don't ask for crazy things and whatever they do get, they appreciate it. If we can't afford their 1 expensive gift ($80 value max.) for christmas, we explain they will get it within a few weeks and they understand but they always have something to open even if it was something from the dollar store. My son asked for pokemon cards and he was so happy about it last year when he got them.
