Oklahoma’s Constitution requires all bills to be single issue. “Logrolling” issues together is prohibited. It would be nice to have this federally.

Sorry but so long as the executive office is illegally using military soldiers for law enforcement duties there is no middle ground. We can’t “both sides bad” when one side is acting blatantly unconditionally.

Our lawmakers can't digest these 1000+ page bills. Most of them never read the bills. I mean, who can read and evaluate a 1000+ page bill?

honestly i dont multi issue bills, but put a page limit on it.
12 pt font, 1.5 space, can be no longer than 10 printed 8.5"x11" pages.

Congress can't even read the entire bill before voting on it.

I don't think this is an issue of disagreement between conservatives and progressives. I think maga is just convinced they should follow one person no matter what, not a code of conduct laid out in the Constitution. Plus I think many would agree that it's the financial incentives baked in by lobbyists that really determine the voting outcomes on legislation

Bring back pork barrel politics. It gave individual congress people motivation to cross party lines on certain bills that would benefit people in their district.

maybe a bill length and maximum limit of proposals to spread then out?

Heck, common Americans can’t digest these bills, but neither can legislators. Even with staffers who dig through specific parts, we’ve seen far too many legislators surprised by the contents of a bill during an interview.

I don’t mind large bills for funding. Obviously the NDAA is going to be massive, even if it’s technically only funding the military. The problem is during committee the majority party can just ram whatever they like and the minority rarely gets to edit the bill. On less partisan issues, both sides contribute, but something like the BBB, Dems had no way of editing. Making something like the NDAA be single line bills would take weeks of votes to pass.

It’s the filibuster that creates the massive bills. The only bills passed now are budget reconciliation bills because they are filibuster proof. Not since the 60’s has any party had the super majority required for the sort of single issue legislation that used to be common.

Also, my biggest gripe with the common ground video is reducing congressional pay while also removing all other revenue streams Congress currently uses. Many members take lobbyist money, and insider trade because their pay isn’t enough to cover housing in two locations and the cost of travel. If we make them take minimum wage, and remove all improper revenues, only wealthy individuals could even be in Congress, which would make the class disconnect worse. They need to be paid fairly, and paid hourly to incentivize less holidays and breaks. And they need Congressional dorms to live for free in DC. Then we can ban stocks and lobbyist.

The republicans began to shun compromise and abuse the filibuster. Only 2 bills per year can get through on 51 votes. That’s a big reason we have the mega bill issue.

I like all of this. thank you. how do you define "one thing?" I mean, where does the line get drawn between five things around one idea? and one thing with five subconcepts?
In the example bill about ending segregation, he mentioned public and private spaces. why are they allowed to define it that this bill is about ending segregation, instead of ending segregation in private spaces and ending segregation in public spaces?
thank you very much
