At my first duty station we had a machinery repairman with the last name Cox. Now the Navy includes your job title (rating) when discussing what other branches would call enlisted rank (Which is called a Rate, enlisted in the Navy don't have rank, only officers do). The official abbreviation for Machinery Repairman is MR (I hope this makes sense so far). When he was promoted to Petty Officer Third class (E4) his official rate was MR3 Cox, so when he was promoted to Petty Officer second class (E5) he became MR2 Cox and we'd all ask him what happened to the third one. Couple that with the E3 rate for his profession being a "fireman" because he was an engineering rate, was abbreviated MRFN Cox which was constantly "mistaken" for "Mister F**ck'n Cox, during the DADT days, it's a wonder that man reenlisted.
