@tilscience: For 170 years, Inuit communities knew exactly where the Franklin Expedition ships were. They had detailed oral histories. They provided specific locations. They described what happened to the crew. They even drew maps. For 170 years, Western searchers ignored them. In 2014, researchers found HMS Erebus exactly where Inuit knowledge said it would be. Then in 2016, the HMS Terror was discovered right where Inuits said it would be. Same thing. An Inuit hunter named Sammy Kogvik had literally seen one of the ships decades earlier and reported it, but no one believed him. On Indigenous Peoples Day, the Franklin Expedition reminds us: Indigenous Knowledge isn’t just valid, it’s often more accurate than the “advanced” technology we use to prove it right 170 years too late. The mystery was never unsolved. We just weren’t listening to the people who had the answers. #indigenous #IndigenousTikTok #arctic #unsolvedmysteries #History

we have a similar problem in Australia. because our Aboriginal mobs didn't built towns they moved with the seasons, they were seen as primitive. but scientists are just realising how deep our knowledge of the stars, animals, seasons movements and how to move with them for the best living results are.

As a native Arizonan, I’d love to learn more about the missing Anasazi went. I’m betting the tribes still there have a few ideas!

A man (Frederick Schwatka) in the town where I live was sent from 1878-1880 by the American Geographical Society to look for records believed to have left on King William Island by the lost Franklin expedition.

I had a book about this when I was a kid. I think it was a national geographic book. It had that photo of the "mummy". That image is seared into my brain for life

They said it was one of the coldest winters on record for the Arctic during the Franklin expedition. The ships were trapped in ice for over two years until the ice broke the ships apart and they sank
