@justahumblecook: Is culinary school worth it? Last time I posted this, it was cut into two parts and a lot of people missed either part 1 or 2. So I combined them into 1 for easy watching! Lmk what you thinkif you! #cooking #food #chef #privatechef #personalchef

Can I ask, every show, movie, or video of a restaurant kitchen environment I have seen portrays it as an abusive shouting match where positive reinforcement is nowhere to be found. Is there a definitive reason for that or is it simply how it has always been. Are there restaurants that do not have those types of environments and do they perform lower or have lower quality food or cook times? It has never made sense to me why it seems to always be a terrible work environment

i know i already commented but i have such a passion for cooking but due to my age being 21, i already feel like its too late for me to go into culinary school or be in a culinary environment, its such a competitive job market that rarely gives back.

Being a very seasoned sous chef that never went to culinary school- don’t go. Learn from your failures, find the cuisine you want to be apart of, find a city that adheres to your lifestyle, learn from every person you meet, and for the love of god- learn how to sharpen a knife. Knowledge is great but experience AND knowledge are everything for this industry and every other one. (Avoid people that call themselves chef)

Well said Brian. I went to school (‘97) and yes I might be the last cook standing. I came up during the time of the rise of the superstar chef. Everybody wanted to be the next White, or Andres, or Trotter. They don’t realize all the floors you’ll mop, or dishes you’ll wash or missed events like birthdays, holidays, and funerals. It’s tough job. That’s what Advil is for! But I can say with pride I gave more than I took; I prepared many young cooks for success, and made my mark, albeit small, on my industry. The sacrifices made at the altar of the culinary gods is steep.

I started my first cook job at 20 then quit my last one when I was 32. Shifted to IT work, best move ever. I loved and hated it. I still love cooking. There was a few months, that I worked 7 days a week 8 to 10 hours a day, for very little money. I got taken advantage off. Most restaurant owners will pay you as little as possible to line there wallet. Also you might pick up a substance abuse problem. I did. Especially alcohol 🍸. I would not recommend anyone going after this kind of career unless you're ready to give up alot and have a passion for it.

I scoff at burns and cuts after being in the industry for years and years. They're like amusing inconveniences at this point.

what if I just simply love to cook and wanna learn different techniques? I want to be able to expand my cooking skills and knowledge as a personal hobby, so I've been thinking about doing culinary school. is that good enough or not worth it? i'm not in the industry and don't plan on working in restaurants
