because "whiteness" in europe is different from "whiteness" in the US. europe is moreso divided by nationality and culture. e.g. eastern europeans being treated so poorly in western europe, despite their whiteness. americans struggle to understand this, bc they generalise europe so much and even minimise it to being a 'country', but in reality the history/linguistic/cultural differences across europe makes it very divided and hostile to those outside the nation - especially americans

The language thing is really so much more important than ppl realise. Like a large majority of the population might speak good English but you still will need to know the language to get a job a lot of the time.

This is so true! I was in Paris speaking to a guy. Mind you I'm black Canadian! I asked a question, he turned to me with such irritation and said: that question you asked sounds like an American should ask that question! The irritation wasn't due to be me being black, the mere thought of America made him irritated 😅

African-Americans that move to Europe gladly discover that they are perceived as “Americans”, without any weight on the ”African”. White Americans unfortunately discover that they are also perceived as “Americans” without any consideration to “but my whole family is Irish/italian/german/whatever” 😅
