@mayimbialik: Throwback to our Ask Mayim Anything #5 episode on Bialik Breakdown where I tackled your parenting questions like combating overstimulation as a parent. Any parents out there relate to this? Watch more at the link below. 🧠💥 https://youtu.be/ZC6OShyy-34
Going through perimenopause my startle reflex & sound sensitivity is hard to deal with, amongst lower energy levels. Having later in life children is especially hard for me as an au/adhd woman with au/adhd kids.

I got to a point where I didn’t even recognize myself as a mom anymore. I was yelling, stressed, exhausted. Reading Guiding Cooperative Children by Rachel Thomas showed me a completely different way to handle moments like this. My kids listen now… and I feel like myself again

One thing that has ‘helped’ me is looking at it from the perspective of I get to demonstrate for my kids how to communicate their needs respectfully while still making sure the needs of others are getting met. (My youngest is 8) Usually goes something like me having to take a deep breath or some kind of mild stemming along with ‘hold on momma is a bit overstimulated at the moment and I need a minute or two (to breathe, of quiet, ect) and then I’ll be able to (insert a million and one possibilities) with you.’ Now they can sometimes notice I’m getting overstimulated before I say anything and I voice appreciation for their understanding.

I feel so bad for not letting my kid be the kid he is because I’m a mom who sometimes can’t be the mom I want to be

Keep in mind too that previous generations are GREATLY underdiagnosed and may have been dealing with some of this too. I’ve found myself learning to forgive my parents for snaps like this that were likely them being in a bad state.

We can’t get a diagnosis of ADHD because doctors say it’s “just” anxiety

this is why I can't have kids. I get overstimulated very easily and that is not fear to the kid.

I am so thankful I went to therapy ahead of time and I realized one child would be just enough. I have zero regrets on one child.💜

I'm 56 and never realized while I was raising 6 sons that I had it even though 2 of my sons are on the spectrum. I DEFINITELY wish I had known because I know i would have handled many things differently. I didn't scream at them to be quiet but it was more like id go quiet basically completely zone out. So many things I would have done differently but all in all considering I think I did a pretty good job. My sons seem to like and love me lol

As an empty nester I’ve realized I’m like my grandfather. I love quiet time. But the challenge was a single parent of four children.
