I started teaching my niece and nephew the Bill of Rights when they were little, and I still quiz them to make sure they really understand their Fifth Amendment. I’ve watched them use it. Once a police officer stopped my nephew at school to question him about his friends, and he looked him dead in the eye and said, “I plead the Fifth.” When the officer told him to come to the office, he didn’t back down; he said, “I want my dad, I want a lawyer, and I plead the Fifth,” and that was the end of it. He was 7 years old. Kids need to know this: the second a teacher, principal, administrator, or any adult starts questioning them, they should say those three things: I want my parents, I want a lawyer, and I plead the Fifth. Then say absolutely nothing else until their parent or lawyer is there to speak for them.
