80psi on a small engine should be enough for it to run

#1: signed work order authorizing diagnostics from the start.
#2: after compression test reveals low compression, tear it down.
#3: call customer and inform him of issues found and invite him to come look.

make contracts. im in process now finding and making them. I charge 50 for diag. if that would have been me? I may have lost a customer but I also lost a future headache with them! if they want it rebuilt cool! I'll do it sign the contract!

You did fine, cost of rebuild would be more expensive than buying a new one, just not worth it to repair.

I worked at a small engine shop. We stopped working on 2 strokes still supply parts.
And business picked up after one month on the stuff that's worth working on. No money in 2 strokes unless you like to collect them.

As an automotive service advisor for 12.5 years I think you did it properly. 100% on point. Potentially bring your “shop” talk down to easier terms maybe? That’s the only think I can think of

if you don't already, put everything in writing. make it clear and concise, and have the customer sign it. helps eliminate headaches.

$40 is fair. You did what you could. Some people would be mad if you give them a winning lottery ticket. 🤷♂️🤷♂️

Now if they really want it fixed I’ll fix it but I’ll make them sign something that says what the repairs will be and I will not be liable and it won’t have any warranty on the work that’s done to it

I'd have done what the customer wanted. Rebuild it for him after he acknowledges there will be no warranty on the repair. Get him to sign off on it.

question a rebuild isn't a long term fix? why? shouldn't a rebuild put it to where it should be originally? I understand the cost being impractical versus a new one but rebuild is rebuilt I assumed and I over haul engines.

Will be above 1k I usually won’t do the work on it reason is because if they want to keep fixing it still won’t be like new and they’ll find something else to complain about after the fix.

i think your options & explanations were fine. he didnt want his diag fee refund so id assume he was satisfied with yr work & may want to do business in the future. imo, his attitude was not abt you, yr shop or yr price, he,s mad at his broke machine, just having a bad day.

Here's what we do. If we do an estimate and they don't want to fix it it's the fee. if it's not repairable we don't charge them. but once I find out it's low we just stop. some folks want to pay still. it's just not worth the hassle unless they insist on us digging into it more.
