Big fan here; I studied Austen at Oxford. Watch the various versions, too, while you’re getting used to the Regency English - which yes people in Austen’s era would have spoken (well, those formally educated). As far as the punctuation, in Regency English it was used more in a rhetorical fashion; like if one would naturally pause in a sentence, a comma would be used. As opposed to the way we utilize punctuation now, particularly commas, in a more syntactical way. Does that make sense?

I’m also rereading classics and it’s hard. But it’s forcing me to slow down which I love

Try an annotated version. It’s a great way to get the language and have some more context.

I love love love Jane Austen! My favorite is Persuasion. Once you finish Pride & Prejudice be sure to read more of her books. Once you are in that reading flow, the language will ease and you can enjoy the stories! Emma is great and so is Northanger Abbey!

The Picture of Dorian Gray and Pride and Prejudice were published almost 80 years apart, so the language is probably also a little easier because it’s closer temporally to us!

My girl Jane loves a run on sentence. One time as I was reading her, a single sentence took up about half a page, maybe Persuasion.

I’m reading Frankenstein and I have to reread sentences over and over again. I love it. But it is a lot.

Also know what you mean about the writing! I love that once you get in the flow you realize Jane Austen is so funny. Like in the example you read…just the sickest burn on Mr Collins and shade at Charlotte.

I also read wuthering heights at 14 and wrote an essay for school. Would love to see that because I know I understood 0% of what was going on 😅

I haven’t read a book in a while but I had picked this book up in the thrift and I thought maybe it was just me being dumb because I’d finish a paragraph and not know what I just read so I’d have to re read it lmao

When I want tube up my brain I read Austin. The language is so exquisitely written but requires a mental muscle that I rarely use.

I find JA writes with so many layers of meaning, that’s why her novels take so long to read. Also, she makes lots of references only her audience would understand, so don’t be afraid to look things up. But, if it’s taking you a while you are reading in the best possible way!
