I came online because I wanted to tell her story. I wanted something meaningful to come from what happened to us, and I hoped that by being honest about our experience, maybe I could help someone else. And there was so much good that came from it. I found a community. I made real friends, some who I call my best friends. People told me that sharing our story helped them feel less alone, and I will always be grateful for that. I wasn’t making a ton of money doing this. I made a very modest amount from my books, but somewhere along the way, people decided I must be getting rich off of her story. I was called a clout chaser. A terrible mother. People told me I belonged in prison, that I deserved the electric chair, and compared me to people who had actually harmed their children. For a crime I did not commit. Eventually, the good wasn’t enough to outweigh what it was doing to me. I felt completely lost about what to do with this page. I didn’t want to keep sharing the most painful parts of my life just to defend myself against strangers, but I also didn’t know who I was online without that story. I came very close to deleting the page altogether. And then I thought, fine. If people are going to be angry at me for making money anyway, maybe I should actually go make some money. I started doing TikTok shop. It felt almost ridiculous after everything I had been sharing here but in doing something for me, I realized I was having fun. I’m still proud that I told her story. I’m grateful for the community and friendships it gave me, and I will never regret trying to turn something horrible into something that could help someone else. But I also know now that I didn’t have to keep reopening that wound and bleeding for the whole world to see. I’m so much happier just doing this.
