why did you delete your video mocking Madeline and trying to teach her how to be a successful comedian?

Going into cultural markets should be behaving like being a guest in someone’s home.

I hope Soogia sees this too. I think the experience of being Asian and Asian American so much more complex send little tiny bit of social media can express. this beautiful essay is one story that happens to be like my story. And yet my story is radically different because of Time and place and history. Even in the same city. Thank you for your essay. I wish we could hear even more stories

As an Ethiopian, I love the mess of my Ethiopian restaurants and stores too. 😭 it’s our other home. I don’t tell white ppl about them bc like you said they treat us like our places are embarrassing. 😭 “Why are you laughing at my mom?” I cried. 😭😭

My brother designs packaging like the one your mom collected. He’s so proud of his work, so I love she took that in and so sorry she felt shame for enjoying it.

Thank you for writing this. As a white person who regularly shops in Asian grocery stories and the like, I recognize that my presence can be seen as intrusive, hypocritical, and possibly even frightening. While the thought of this deeply saddens me, my feelings in this situation do not matter. I am entering a new friend’s home. The least I can do is treat it with respect, kindness, and most importantly, curiosity.

I am sobbing at this. I don't understand why people can't just let others exist in a way that brings them joy. I wish I knew how to help.

😭 Your writing is so good, you explain your feelings so well, and that story about your mom broke my heart. I've seen displays like that and thought they were pretty too, so I totally understand why your mom did that. Stayed for the whole essay. Please keep writing. ❤

We grew up in a poor village in dictatorship albania and I remember people would display empty coca-cola bottles or empty perfume bottles as decor because they enjoyed those objects’s shape. I still feel shame thinking back despite understanding why we did it. We were poor and did not have these things in our daily lives so when we came across one, we were proud of it and wanted all to see.

As someone with a white dad and a beautiful indigenous Mexican mother- this had me sobbing. I am not Korean, but have felt similarly at the panaderías and the mercados. Thank you for so beautifully sharing this experience.

Your writing is so raw and profound. As a person who is also mixed race I really appreciate how you articulated the tension I think many of us feel between aspects of our identity.

Beautifully put. It’s a lifelong pain to be separated from the thing you’re supposed to be innately connected to. I think we’ll carry it forever.

I am a very very white person who shopped at Joong Boo last week. I thought about none of those things. all I thought was how embarrassing it is that I know so little bout this culture that I practically needed someone to hold my hand to guide me through. and all the employees there cheerfully helped me when I asked them my ignorant questions. I was very thankful

being half japanese i felt this so much. i moved to the us when i was 12 from japan and i tried so hard to fit in that i ended up causing harm to my sense of identity and ultimately to my family, feeling shame and embarrassment and resisting keeping up with the language. now i work in japan and still at 25 continue to unlearn all of the attitudes i held as a means of “survival”. i wish i had the courage to be proudly japanese, but also giving myself the grace of - i was a literal child. anyway, i wanted to say how beautiful this essay is. trying now to cry on the train in tokyo

Going from “I have a one person show where I play my grandmother, my mother, and then myself.” To “But the reason that no one got mad at me for my joke is that, when I said the joke, I said it from a place of understanding: I am the white person.” could encapsulate half of the long conversations I’ve had with myself about my mixed race identity.
