Martin Schoeller has photographed more than 3,000 people in exactly the same way. His ongoing series Close Up, that began in the 1990s, places celebrities and everyday people against the same neutral background, under the same soft light, at the same distance from the camera. Each portrait is framed tightly, from forehead to chin. No clothing. No setting. No gesture. Almost none of the usual clues we use to decide who someone is. The idea was inspired, by Bernd and Hilla Becher’s systematic photographs of industrial structures. Schoeller applied the same discipline to the human face. The famous and the unknown receive the same attention. Using a long lens and frontal lighting, he records every pore, wrinkle, blemish, and flicker of expression. He waits for the moment when the subject stops performing and something unguarded appears. After more than 25 years, Close Up has become one of the most recognizable portrait series in contemporary photography.
