one for the road is completely wrong...prisoners weren't allowed to go to the pub for a drink. it is literally what is. one last drink before going on the road home

They were allowed mutiple stops , often drunk by the time they arrived at the gallows . Hanging often failed and they were allowed to go free.. after a night in the cells sobering up . Hence a hangover

Miners used a mining cart as a lavatory. They would put a section of chain under a wheel to keep it from rolling. As a joke when someone was sitting on the pot in the cart a guy would remove the chain so the cart would go rolling down the tracks while the other guys pants are around his ankles 😂 Hence the term, "Don't yank my chain!"

Furthermore to the info on prisoners last drink one for the road to keep them calm during transport, however the driver had to stay sober hence he was “on the wagon” .

Boban Inamorato :
Most of these “origins” people repeat are just folk etymology dressed up as facts. “Raining cats and dogs” has nothing to do with animals falling off roofs; it’s a 17th-century metaphor for violent weather and urban chaos. “Testify” comes from Latin testis meaning witness, not Romans grabbing each other’s testicles—that’s modern shock-bait nonsense confusing it with testiculus. “Honeymoon” was never a medieval honey-drinking ritual; it meant a “honey month” whose sweetness was expected to fade, and early writers used it ironically. “POSH” is not “Port Out, Starboard Home”; it’s late British slang with an uncertain origin, probably tied to money, not luggage tags. And “mad as a hatter” existed before Lewis Carroll and can’t be proven to come from mercury poisoning—hatters did suffer mercury exposure, but the phrase was a stereotype first, later given a fake scientific backstory. These explanations survive not because they’re true, but because people prefer neat, memorable stories over messy historical reality.
