@oh.gaylord_: 🏡💰 401K vs. Buying a Home: The TAX TRUTH Nobody Talks About Bill and Christine break down why using a portion of your 401K for a down payment can make sense — and how capital gains exemptions on your home might beat long-term 401K taxes. 👀 Diversify. For everyone watching, you can’t take money from your 401k TAX FREE with the “pretax” money. You can take 10k as a hardship 1 time from an IRA. You pay the tax but no 10% penalty. These people are talking in circles and making you think it’s tax free to buy a house using your 401k

That's only if you have a traditional 401k. A Roth 401k, you pay taxes upfront so you don't have to pay taxes when you withdraw. GET A ROTH 401K, NOT A TRADITIONAL 401K.

Its likely in the future taxes will be higher, so I think its best to pay income tax now on Roth IRA contributions and pay 0 tax upon withdrawal in retirement

That’s why you do 50 percent Roth and 50 percent traditional.

You cant buy a house with your 401k. There is a 50k loan limit and a hardship for a home will hit you with an extra 10%

I have principal I took out $15K for a hardship withdrawal, it was taxed on top about $1600 to take out. Use it for a down payment on my home. $55K in equity immediately… no brainer
