I was always a gifted reader, tested out every year, got put in the advanced levels 5 years of being some reading prodigy, then I hit middleschool and suddenly I was staring down the weight of expectations I crumbled so fast covid didn't help things I can't help but feel like I was supposed to be better than this ya know?

As a person who was formerly gifted, the issue that comes along with it is no one teaches you how to handle things normally. When that burnout hits and suddenly you’re right with everyone else or struggling to keep up with the weight of the 4 advanced classes they set you in because “you can do better”, suddenly you’re left to realize that you don’t have the study skills, grit and discipline to get through it. (I was personally a “gifted kid” who just constantly got shoved into higher and higher classes while simultaneously being ignored by teacher, staff and being written off daily. When I actually started to fall behind and struggle to a point of near failure, those same teachers kind of raised a brow at me and just said “you can do better ofc we’re not gonna help you”)

I was reading at college level in elementary school bumped up a grade and wrote in college level Grammer (with bad ish hand writting but better than the entire grade) and I was typing out articles and writing books by middle school and now I can't even remember commas or semi colons in the proper spot. not only that but I have trouble spelling now after being in national spelling bees in middle school. I forget how to spell simple things like pencil or Tomorrow. just now I spelled pencil with two c's and Tomorrow with two m's corrected by spell the spell check. I have to sound out words now when writing and I write on computer to fix my Grammer before writing on my books.

Im in this situation rn I always got perfect scores on moy and stuff got advance and put in special programs I was called valedictorian at a young age said how it was easy. Then middle school they put me in virtual and it’s ruining me Im expected to be the smarter student teachers come to me and ask for my help kids come and when I get something wrong they blame me my teachers aren’t teaching and my grades are slipping idk what to do anymore im suppose to do act next year and people expect me to score high I have to idk what I am anymore.

no one talks about how being gifted at a young age effects a kid mainly when they test so high so young but the gifted program wont take you being you "need to much help" so you contuine testing high till high school and burn out losing a skill in the process

I was never the smartest. Never gifted. I was smart, but not enough. There was the “gifted” kids that were better than me. They got awards and praise, while I was just the inbetween.
