That’s not the message of wicked. The message wicked is the inverse of the message of the Wizard of Oz. The WoO teaches that those perceived as good are often actually evil. Wicked shows the inverse: those perceived as evil may actually be good. The “common enemy” theme is simply a plot device to explain the wizard’s actions. It isn’t the moral of the story. And while it’s true that the audience never perceives Elphaba as evil, the theme is communicated just as well when the confusion occurs intradiegetically (within the story).
