This is a great description. For the longest time I didn't know what annotating was or why people did it and I'm a lifelong avid reader (44 yrs old). I struggle bc I grew up in the era of not marking up books, plus I do a lot of audio, digital, and library books. but I take pictures on my phone of phrases or quotes I love, so I know I'm engaging. my question is: do you go back and read all your annotations?

These comments are weird… being “well read” isn’t just about finishing books. If you’re not slowing down to reflect, question, and connect ideas, you’re missing a lot of what literature offers. Annotation isn’t required, but it absolutely deepens comprehension and makes the experience more meaningful. So people calling it “over complicating” or “A waste” is so bizarre

I’ve always struggled with not wanting to “ruin” the book with my handwriting. I kinda like the idea of getting a journal dedicated to each book that I read. 🤔

I was actually doing some research on annotating today and your video popped up so it was meant to be. I’ve started using tabs and I have a journal where I write down quotes and thoughts/feelings while I read. I am still working up the courage to write on my books.

I annotate but I’m looking to make my system more consistent, right now I change what each color of my tabs means based on the book but I never make a key😆 this helps a lot!💚

I do the "Re-Reading Method". The 1st time is for the plot, if I like the book then the 2nd time I'll write in a journal, & then for all future reads I read with my journal next to me. I just personally prioritize immersion. I also think people should be reading their books multiple times. But there's no wrong way to read & enjoy a novel.
