Oh this is so fun! I'd love to see more about historical slang. It's so evocative of the time and place, but so difficult to research if you aren't very fluent😓

very informative as always! Is there a term for the type of girl that would use these terms unironically?

In line with the seaweed thought, it's interesting how Japanese saw the need for several words for the different social dynamics while English seems to have filed it all under "simp". Thank you for the video

It’s so fun linguistically these words are of the same time period as two other things that remind me of this that I have filed away in my brain; first is how Takeuchi Naoko talked about relationships and the men she finds attractive, and second is Moritaka Chisato’s song Miha. Idk they just all give off the same kinda vibe imo lol

There aren’t any contending men in my life now but I love super sento. Could I use 本命 for my favorite spot? For example: いろんな銭湯に行くけど、香りのいいロウリュがあるところが本命薫!

I get amused stares when I teach these to my 19- and 20-year old Japanese students. I tell them to ask their parents.

This is great timing, I was just having a conversation with my mother in law about these terms. She said every popular woman had at least one of each type 😅
