@byjacklynn: There is an enslaved child in this seemingly innocent family portrait, can you see him? In 2007 conservators at the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow discovered another figure in this 1767 painting that had been obscured by dirt and age. It showed a young black boy who had been enslaved by John Glassford and trafficked to Scotland. But so little about him is known - his story is lost to history What is so poignant is at first glance this is a fairly innocent family portrait, showing what appears to be a happy family with many healthy children, but within it hides another child stolen away from his own family. “In the 1700s many enslaved people were trafficked to Scotland to work as domestic servants. Enslavers like Glassford saw this child as a fashionable accessory symbolising their family’s wealth and status, not as an equal human being.” - Kelvingrove Gallery and Museum Painting: John Glassford and his family, about 1767-8 Archibald McLauchlan #scottishhistory #historytok

He was probably placed in the painting to show off the family's wealth, as though he were an inanimate object.

I will never understand how people could treat others this way and just get on with life with no conscience, consequences or compassion.

He was somebody’s baby, kidnapped and trafficked. His family probably never knew what happened to him. They would have spent the rest of their lives wondering and hoping for news. The pain must have been unbearable.

Art History major here, he was depicted like that because they viewed their slaves as nothing more than an appliance. They valued realism over all else in their commission work so if he was there he was painted just like the table. He was a person.
