Vet clinics are already so drama filled and bullying mean atmosphere, I can’t even imagine the racism and micro-aggressions that black veterinarians would face, inclusion is so important and diversity is key!

Speaking as a black woman & vet tech - it’s the micro- (& regular) aggressions, and it doesn’t pay enough. People that have more financial support can stay in the field longer or afford the education to level up. Others like myself get burnt out from it quick, overlooked for promotions, no support in leveling up, etc. If I wasn’t a military veteran, I don’t think I could even consider vet school tbh.

AGREED! A whole ‘nother topic is that black people have deep Agriculture and Veterinary roots in us already. It’s a part of our history but over the years we have been made to fear animals. I agree that we don’t have the support that we need and people to look up to. I didn’t see black or other POC in vet med until college (except for a summer high school program at Tuskegee) and that needs to change.

I’m currently working as a veterinary assistant at a clinic that’s predominantly white I’m the only Black girl on staff. I’m also on my second cycle of applying to vet school I’m hoping and praying I get in this year. I love caring for animals but I also wanted to become a vet cuz of the lack of representation I wanted to show that the younger generation can do that in the future when they see my face as their pets’ doctor.

Working is this field is a huge regret, 21 years in and I am still the only black person on the floor. I didn't need therapy until this field. I love animal medicine but can not stand the ppl in it, the racism, passive aggressive behavior, micro aggression, not being paid for your skills, no real support, no mentoring, not wanting you to grow, etc... I've been held back from opportunities and often times told why I shouldn't go to vet school or tech school while watching the others be encouraged to go.
