@drrachelbarr: Books that will turn you into a reader 📖 🧠 Emotional, very visual. Feels like someone is telling you an old legend with conversational but polished, practiced language. The Song of Achilles OR Circe — Madeline Miller Stoner — John Williams East of Eden — John Steinbeck Short, sharp, no-nonsense. Very few extra words, lots of dialogue that sounds like real people talking, and a cool, slightly detached tone. Good if you hate anything flowery. Flesh — David Szalay Weather OR Dept. of Speculation — Jenny Offill Very clear, direct writing that is subtly poetic. Descriptive language that doesn’t register as flowery. You forget you’re reading because it feels like watching a movie with lots of drama and feeling. The Kite Runner — Khaled Hosseini Klara and the Sun — Kazuo Ishiguro Long, chatty, brainy inner monologue. Lots of side-thoughts and humour, irony. Cynical but… in a soft, sort of friendly way. “Life’s a bitch, but I am not. The universe is unfeeling, but I am human.” The Idiot — Elif Batuman Things I Don’t Want to Know OR The Cost of Living — Deborah Levy

I did a habit tracker for a year and at the end of that year I noticed the days that I won (adhd wars) were days that I began my morning by reading for 30 mins. Seemed to lubricate the brain and create forward motion

Kite Runner is one of the best books I’ve ever read and it’s absolutely devastating. I’m a total rereader and I cannot go back to that one. Incredibly well written, compelling story but a heartbreaker.

I clean medical buildings at night when they close, I listen to audiobooks for every shift !! I’d rather listen to a book than to music .

Thank you for the recommendations. I couldn’t agree more. Started reading daily again, and the clarity that my mind feels is astonishing. Books can help you internalize your thoughts and emotions more clearly. May I suggest to the audience to create a little dictionary? It really helps you memorize the new words that you come across. 😃happy holidays everyone

do listening to audiobooks have a similar effect as reading physical copies? I have really bad adhd and I just feel less distracted when im listening to it than physically reading it.

What do you think of Oliver Sacks? I read his book The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat and found it to be an easy reading first book for people interested in neuroscience.

Complex human stories... this one book led me into the world of Fantasy which is On A Pale Horse' by Piers Anthony. This delved into morality while immortal, and made me think if I would have made the same choices as the main character. It's a good read.

thoughts on the audiobook vs text book from a neuroscience perspective? (i prefer sitting & reading - it’s like a movie in my head & i emotionally get more invested, but my friends prefer audiobooks & i don’t get the same reading experience with them)
