I think as immigrants we become the busybee because of our language and communication skills. Most of the times we do t understand hence can’t use American jaegons, we are not that complete fluent in American English, plus people makes fun of our accent and always seems like we have to repeat ourselves before they understand. It takes time for us to become as fluent and to get rid of the accent. Hence, we just do what we are paid to do and go home to our people.

Many people do, but in POC experience that oftentimes puts a target on your back so it’s not always as simple as “you’re not speaking up.” Or “you’re being too humble.” I know there are exceptions where you have a great team and manager who do advocate for you, but oftentimes it ends up “othering you” even more if you come off as boastful and among an already biased group.

I remember once I said something along the lines of “us Latinos” … and when we left that meeting my manager said to me “don’t say that again, Americans don’t like that” … never again did I used my heritage as a chip in my shoulder. Literally Sofia vergara style, in my presentations: I say what I need to say and pause and see if they understood it and if they don’t say anything I move on with my presentation and expect nothing but claps at the end.

This is what I've been struggling alot for years, bragging about my work. I'm from a southeast asian country where we are taught to keep our heads down and work hard. Having opinions in classes are even not encouraged.

Yes daughter of an immigrant who started her corporate career at 32. Every piece of advice my dad and uncle gave me was outdated and was not helpful.

This clearly isn't the best way as a POC....with all the DEI and anti immigrant sentiment of this administration..🤷
