@thinkingcanine: This Malinois goes after a jogger, and not in a friendly way. Understandably an unsafe situation, a mistake, whatever. I think I’m most curious about what my protection sports friends think, but also what everyone in general thinks. Lots of people getting bent about this video out there!
I’m tired of dog owners using the general public without consent to train their reactive dangerous dogs.

Then the leash was let out a lot, hell no. She should not have had it in reach of other people, she needs to train that dog AWAY from people.

I’m not a trainer, but correct me if I’m wrong as a dog owner. To me, it looked like dog went into protective mode when it saw a coming in large and fast target . It went to instinct, protect . Now her leash was too long if they’re training and personally, if my dog was reactive to people, I would’ve put a soft muzzle or the box one so the dog can’t bite a person IF we need to be in public.

Giving her dog that length of a lead puts the owner directly responsible for this. Especially a Malinois. The motivation isn’t really relevant to the innocent jogger. I’m still a believer there are much fewer bad dogs, and many more bad owners.

Long leashes are terrible in crowded areas. Just why?!?

She set her dog up to fail. Train the dog in a more controlled environment. That area has a lot of stimulation and unpredictable moving targets. If you want to use a long lead for training in a spot like that, have someone else on the other side of the dog with a second lead.

a retractable leash is a poor choice for an unpredictable dog.

Dog was fixed on him well before, she should've known to close the gap and shorten the leash for control.

I am a veterinarian, and every vet I know hates those extendable leashes to start with. The breed is one I'd expect this actually happening, and I honestly think she knew this was possible, but used a extra long leash anyway. They do protection sports training, she knows the dogs behavior and risk level.
