When these muscle spasms occur, the jaw can suddenly pull open or twist into an abnormal position, and the person may have little or no control over it. Because the muscles involved in chewing are some of the strongest in the body, once they contract forcefully, the jaw can be extremely difficult to close—even with assistance. This can make eating, speaking, and even basic mouth movements challenging. The condition can be frightening and painful, not only because of the muscle force but also because the jaw may lock in place for stretches of time. Treatment often involves medications, botulinum toxin injections to reduce muscle overactivity, and supportive therapies to help manage symptoms.
