My Grandpa (who identified as Cree or occasionally half breed), was born on a reserve in Alberta, forced into residential school there. He only came to BC after serving in WWII. There is a long, woven web of history.

They are just like any other visitor. They might get services through their sec. 35 rights but it’s not tied to the territory they’re residing in outside Red River otherwise that would only be another form of colonialism happening concurrently with Canada’s.

I blame the federal government by saying that mixed people are all Metis. Metis are distinct and have a written history. Im not Metis, my grandfather on both sides was half breed. They had half breed cards. now the federal government says we are all Metis but I don't qualify for Citizenship because there's a written history that doesn't include mixed people.

I can't see the benefits of indigenous people being so bitcy about Metis. My native friend got all twisted up because I refused to self identify as metis.I said what is your problem? I'm not pretending to be indigenous. She said I was pretending to be white. I said I'm not pretending to be anything. She said your ancestor was probably raped by white men. That makes her a low status woman. I said why do you care so much?

Yep, unceded lands must be tied to traditional territories. It takes thousands of years to create territories and connections to it. Métis traditional territories are closer to MB and that area.

no offense taken it's absolutely true in most senses. I feel absolutely displaced, especially this realization and understanding as an adult. Reminds me of how ppl would try to hush me up as a youngin when I would speak about being Metis, or things my Mother was told growing up and her thinking certain terms or names where different meanings, without knowing the true meaning. thats the point of assimilation, to divide

I would think it's frustrating and confusing. if there's a lineage that goes back to the indigenous people, they should be afforded the same rights and respect for at least second generation forward if not more. That's just my opinion I don't really know a lot about either groups. but I don't think it's smart to fight with each other when you should be working together to make sure that all the people in these groups are shown respect And as I said work together because governments continuously screw over people, from these two groups. And I really don't think that's right. 😌

Thanks for this. I have zero knowledge about these differences. But I went to look up Métis. My friend was adopted and later found her mother in Merrit B.C. She is Métis and as a 20 something at the time just thought it was cool, but never bothered to further my knowledge. How much I don’t know is disturbing.

An old BF of mine had maternal & paternal indigenous grandmothers who lost their tribal rights bcc they married yt men. Those old laws stripped so many of Rights. That meant he was still 1/2 indigenous, 1/4 Scottish & 1/4 Quebecois. He joked he looked more like middle Eastern, his brother looked fully indigenous?
