I think balance bikes are great. Too many people start their children too late on bikes with training wheels, and the kids are afraid to fall. Put them right on a balance bike when they're little.

I got my son a strider for his 2nd birthday. He did so well with it that when my dad got him a pedal bike for his 3rd birthday I took the training wheels off after a few months

Just get a bike small enough for their feet to touch the ground. Both my kids were riding at 3 years old.
