I used free woodchips like from chipdrop for me horses including the round pen. downside, it isn't just chips and does have small branches and pine needles/leaves depending on time of year. plus side, free and the chickens LOVE IT for scratch.

I did straw last winter and my girls ended up with mites. Took me forever to get rid of them. I'd rather use this.

It works temporarily then makes more muck and mud, packed driveway gravel with sand on top is your best bet for permanent solution

call around tree trimming places to see if they have any wood chips! we get deliveries twice a yr and that is what we have used in our coops and runs for almost 3 yrs now. some will come and drop for really cheap!

I sprinkle pea gravel in the spots that get soupy to help slowly build up the soil. I perpetually have some pea gravel in a pile to pull from for walkways & especially low spots & mole holes that my dogs expand. I have ducks & am in WA so I definitely have mud.

I use leaves from my yard and straw. It works very well. I’ve also had really good luck with shredded paper from work
