I actually asked my dermatologist this question once! A better comparison is lash damage after extensions, or plucking. It’s the tension and stress that causes the hair follicles to die. Hair naturally sheds, but isn’t meant to have prolonged trauma. Traction alopecia is really scarring the follicles so they can’t grow, not just plucking the hairs. This is actually how laser hair removal works. They use the laser to damage the follicles itself and stop hair growth. That’s also why you need multiple rounds since the light needs to be absorbed by the melanin in the hair, so it only works on growing hair. That’s also why it can reverse, because hormonal changes can cause new follicles to become active. I wonder if that hormonal process is the key to reversing traction alopecia medically 🧐

I had trichotillomania since I was 11 years old! I am 39, and I stopped pulling my hair since March 2024!! I will have to say, hair is weird. My hair is prematurely color changed due to this now that I have left it to grow. It's wild. I had a rat tail beside both ears, and in the back.. It's TOTALLY a different color and texture! I went from BALD pulling to shoulder length! I would have to wonder if hair is just meant to grow in certain areas. My eyebrows have been pulled since I was 11 too, and it's awful to regrow.. So I don't. I remain eyebrowless. xD

I had thick (fine hair) eyebrows. I went to those 5$ brows as a teen once!…… they've been thin ever since 😩

This is the same as plucking hence why some people who over plucked their eyebrows can’t grow them now

One of my hair science books says plucking can stimulate growth 😑 I agree it seems to more apply to not fine/delicate hairs.
