It’s just a subtype that’s also a subtype. Curry is a category of stew, but not all stews are curries. Same with chili, pottage, compote, hot pot, etc

this feels like a Britishism specifically, because I've had this conversation with folks across the pond lol. where they say they're having "curry" for dinner it could be pretty much any Indian dish, but in Canada we say we're having... Indian.
