i’m a senior materials engineering student specializing in polymers and aerospace, and i work daily with high-performance plastics. “petroleum-based” does not mean cheap, and “plastic” does not mean low quality. plastic is simply a category of synthetic polymers, and while all plastics are polymers, not all polymers are plastics. in textiles many plastics outperform traditional luxury fibers like silk in strength, durability, heat resistance, and longevity. aramids like kevlar, vectran, and high-tenacity polyesters are significantly stronger and more durable than silk. not all polyester is petroleum-derived. polyester refers to a chemical structure, not its feedstock, and it can be made from petroleum, plants, biomass, or recycled materials. so her comment wasn’t inaccurate…

unforch, we are sooo efficient with oil and plastics and so bad with agriculture, emissions wise, polyester is more sustainable 😭😭😭 but I dying at high quality polyester, like was a scent put in or something?😅

when it comes to textiles, polyester quality has nothing to do with being petroleum-based. it’s all about how the polymer is made and how the fibers are processed. the way it’s polymerized and engineered is what decides whether a polyester feels cheap or performs like a luxury fabric.
