King testified in the trial of suspect Colt Gray's father Colin Gray today (Wednesday, February 18), and he recounted how and his fellow school resource officer, Sgt. Donovan Boyd, arrested 14-year-old Colt on Sept. 4, 2024, after Colt killed two teachers and two students at the school and wounded eight other people. King said he saw "a human-shaped object" standing next to another "human-shaped object" on the ground, and he yelled to show their hands. "Did you say it in a polite manner?" Barrow County District Attorney J. Bradley Smith asked. "I said, 'Show me your f***** hands," King answered. He said the person compiled with his command and "he or she immediately got on the ground and didn't move after that." King said the gunman behavior "almost like he knew exactly what to do." "He got in the prone position, which means he got on the stomach, he put his arms out to the side, like an airplane, and then he turned his head and didn't look, turned his head away from us and wasn't looking," King testified. "I kept him at gunpoint to provide lethal coverage while Sgt. Boyd placed on the handcuffs," King continued. King found an "airstar-style rifle" on the ground near the gunman. Smith displayed Colt Gray's booking photo and King confirmed that's what he looked like when he was arrested, though he wasn't wearing jail garb then. Background: A gunman killed two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on September 4, 2024. Eight students and one teacher were injured. The victims were Mason Schermerhorn, 14; Christian Angulo, 14; Richard Aspinwall, 39 and a math teacher and defensive coordinator for the school's football team; and Cristina Irimie, 53 and a math teacher. Colin Gray's oldest son, Colt Gray, is awaiting trial on 55 charges, including counts of murder and aggravated assault. The father is currently on trial for 29 charges, including involuntary manslaughter, second-degree murder, cruelty to children and reckless conduct. Prosecutors say he gave his son the rifle used in the shooting as a Christmas gift, despite being told by law enforcement to keep guns away from him. The jury was selected from Hall County instead of Barrow County because of extensive pretrial publicity in Barrow County. The trial is being held at the Barrow County Courthouse in Winder.
