@shewearssocks: I learned of my own autism in my late 30s. And most of my discoveries have been around how other people *aren’t* autistic and they don’t have the same struggles as me. Which makes me wonder, what else do I experience that other people don’t?! #Autism #autisticadult #actuallyautistic
Wait not all people have internal monologue whaaat😳

I still think people are lying when they say they have no internal monologue. I can't imagine a life without one. I'm not diagnosed.

For me the big one was "what do you mean people don't critically engage with the media they consume".

I realized people lie all the time. I got defeated a thousand times because people lied.

People who don’t have an internal monologue fall asleep in a heartbeat in my experience

Yes, my autistic brother is always reminding me that most people don’t think the way I do! It was really hard to believe that, because the way I think is so logical! 😂

Discovering what hyperphantasia is was a game changer for me. It's not that I can visualize a room I stood in 6 years ago, it's that I can BE in that room without effort, and it's hyper real.

It's kind of similar to how one grows up in childhood. It's not necessarily normal - it's just your normal. And you only learn how people's experiences are different when they start talking about it. And nobody wants to talk about the things that are normal... why would they? It's normal 😂 who would have thought that it wasn't normal to sort your Lego bricks in type, size, color and purpose... Everything else seems insane 😂😂😂

I used to not complain about noise as I thought it was normal and everyone was just handling it better

I realized recently that the type and quality of my internal voice is a really good indicator of my mental health. note made up imagination/escape means depression is high. I obviously ruminate more when I'm anxious. the monologue is quieter (but not gone) when I'm doing well

I remember before I was diagnosed with asthma, I thought everyone had chronic bronchitis and were unable to take a full deep breath. with my ADHD, I can talk about some of the more common features that I personally display (like being very chatty and easily distracted), it's difficult to describe the constant self criticism, the challenge of being motivated to do something boring, the rejection sensitivity, etc.

see the difference is I KNOW I'm different because I've been told constantly my entire life. lost friends, family, jobs etc because I'm always the problem. but those who truly know me tell me that's crazy. so audhd has really helped me classify and clarify and just say ooh OK, I just need to find where I fit best. I'm not the problem

I'm autistic and I've never lined up with anyone on the inner monologue topic.
If I'm thinking about words (conversation, books, TV - many things) I will have several voices actively talking everything through and I can almost hear it.. But most of the time I'm not thinking in words, specific pictures or any type of language really.
Most of the time I can choose to turn the audio description on/off and if I'm alone or with my kids it's mostly off.

I was so confused about “ego deaths” feeling like one is “actually dying” until I found a post by an AFAB ND person explaining that ASD people go through so many phenomena that make an ego death a fundamentally different process to experience. (Alexithymia, dissociation, masking, development of ego and sense of self, etc.) “Ah, now it makes sense.”

My "what?! Other people don't experience this?!", was when I realised that not everyone can smell the difference between people that they know.

If i met Adam Buxton I'd have a quick Ramble Chat 😂 and I feel like the ones without a monologue might go through life like NPCs, like what do you mean you go to bed and just fall asleep and wake up happy wth

Internal monologue (as in with words) is not an autistic thing. i know a lot of neurotypical people who have it.

I have no internal monologue. No voices, no words, no pictures. Just thoughts. And it’s a surprise to me that other people’s brains are so different. But I believe them! And there is no obvious correlation with neurodivergence
