🚨OJATCH BIGGY - the king of sexy Benga. Real name : Elly Mathayo Okatch Otieno, born 1954 in Ujimbe village, Sirembe, Gem, Siaya. He is the reason Dola Kabarry, Aluoch Jamaranda and others exist. Life: At 21, he tried to be a boxer at Railways Club in Kisumu. Because he was big in body, they called him "Biggy". Boxing was too dangerous, so through his neighbour Juma Odundo he joined music as a drummer. He first drummed for Kiwiro Jazz Band led by John Otonde where he made hits like Eliza Anyango, Angeline, Dinnah Kalando. There was fight because Dinnah was not credited to him, so he left. He joined Shirati Jazz of D.O. Misiani also as a drummer. Then he formed his own band Orchestra Super Heka Heka. It was resident at Gusii Night Club in Kisii, then moved to Kisumu Junction Inn which became the home of benga. Well-wishers like Prof. Francis Owino Rew, Hosea Songa helped him buy instruments. His band had legends: Okello Adwera (bass), Paul Olang'o (vocals), Ochieng Viva, Dick Ouma Wuod Gi Mbala Jasuba (rhythm), Owiti Ahuja (solo), Bingwa (drums), later Oginga Wuod Awasi. Music style: He changed benga. Before him, people sang about politicians and rich men. Biggy sang directly about women, love, and sex very openly. That's why elders called his songs obscene, but youth loved him. Songs like Helena Wang'e Dongo (1992), Dorina, Nyathi Nyakach, Okello Jabondo, Adhiambo Nyakobura all became instant hits. His baritone voice and "dengo" style (praising women with lewd lines) made him the biggest crowd-puller in Luo Nyanza in the 90s. Death: He fell ill in late 1997 legs swelling. He died 18th December 1997 at Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu, aged 42-43. Buried 3rd Jan 1998 at Ujimbe. Thousands came, motorcade from Dudi centre to his home. After his death, Super Heka Heka split and gave birth to modern benga - his drummer Dola Kabarry formed Super Haki Haki, Aluoch Jamaranda took over Heka Heka. #creatorsearchinsights #createsightinsight
