In my experience, as a westerner, if you asked nicely the staff would normally give you a patch to cover it up, or just ask you to avoid showing the tattoo. I was never barred or kicked out.

Its almost entirely due to the association with the yakuza so not really, Pre meji restoration there was a system of tattooing criminals so that they could be identified and this was adopted by the yakuza as a sign of the creed. Not me or any other Japanese should slander our ainu ancestors

i got the tiniest tattoo (handpoked 2cm size) back in 2018 when i went to an onsen. the staff kept following me around and asking what it was. i convinced them it was pen ink 😅
