to me it always reads as an old, mentally ill version of the narrator themself. The references to "oh golden boy..." line, along with the 'don't hold me like you know me..!' all strike me as someone who had depression growing but tried to hide it before moving away, breaking, and working hard to put themself together again. Now they're home for the holidays and slipping into that old habit, and everyone is wondering why they're different (not that Golden Boy) now. Idk if I'm explaining it well, but basically in my mind it's about someone who is haunted by past versions of themself but so desperately wants to escape and move on and get better, much like other songs in Jack's discography!
