I once asked a youth pastor if the wise men were following Venus - as its the brightest “star” in the sky. All I got was a no. Looking back, it was the equivalent of trust me bro

Went in thinking it would deepen my faith, instead, turned me into an atheist. It's that bad.

Actual answer: They're localizations. Matthew is the English form of the Greek name Maityu, and Peter is the English form of Petros. In Spanish bibles, they're Matteo and Pedro. Yes, I did have a highlighted Bible, and yes, I did end up an atheist.

not to be a pedant (i genuinely find this stuff fun so i thought i'd share): the city from which the ephesians are from is called "ephesus," not "ephesia," and was traditionally attributed to the apostle paul but is now widely believed by scholars to be apocryphal. meanwhile, the name "matthew" comes to us across several languages: hebrew "matityahu" turned into the greek "matthaios," and then the latin "matthaeus," and eventually the english "matthew." peter took a similar journey, originally starting as the greek "petros" meaning "rock," which was itself a translation of the aramaic word "kefa" (greekified as "cephas" in the bible) of the same meaning, which would have been what his actual nickname was... assuming the story is true, of course lmao. neat, huh?
