@pangpangandwang: Perhaps I should clarify that I do not think you should hide your personality at all! I say these are unspoken rules facetiously since I don’t agree with this pattern. What makes us unique and human is exactly what helps us connect to our patients and make our work meaningful. This is a behind the scenes dynamic I’ve observed over the years in training and don’t think is talked about much but needs to be! #medicalschool #residency #doctorsoftiktok #toxicworkplace #psychologyfacts
And being treated like that was not okay. I hated residency.

It’s really unfortunate because if you can “match yourself” well to the vibes, the evals are noticeably better. But then you feel disingenuous for participating in an act for 6 weeks at a time 🫠

Honestly and unfortunate parallel, corporate America or any parts of America where certain melanated folks are the minority. See majority of poc and to lesser extent lower socioeconomic folks experience.

Oh wow I 1000% agree with this. I was always walking on eggshells when starting a new rotation as a med student and even a resident.

And then some of us look around and find everyone else repulsive and vow to never be like them.

The ideal combination would be low self-monitoring but you fit into the work culture perfectly. Sadly this is almost never the case.

Strong disagree, I want my med students and residents to have personalities! I think the key however is making sure to understand the right time and place to show it, and read the room

Im too unhinged and end up showing my personality, but I agree that I need to make peace with the consequences of being rejected. being someone else will mess with my mental health

I’m a neurospicy eldest daughter, my entire life has been high masking to ingratiate myself with other people. Some day I will get to maybe be in private practice and just be myself. I just hope I can maintain my true self through that. I’m definitely ranking programs higher that sent the messaging of truly welcoming and inclusive environments that celebrate differences in styles and personalities. (And reject those who are cruel).
