The arrogant ignorance of the "if you're not reading a physical book printed on paper you're not reading" crowd is spectacular.

So…3 minutes later: no. It doesn’t matter. Just read.

If audio books don't count then why is everyone saying how important it is for parents to read to their kids?

I get distracted too easily with audio books, I didn't think I've ever successfully listened to one.

However; with an audiobook it’s much easier to multitask, which disturbs the comprehension. I assume the studies focused on people sitting on a chair, doing nothing but listening to a book. Not someone walking h through the city, getting lots of visual input and having to be attentive to traffic.

I’m dyslexic. I need to listen to books to ease the cognitive load especially if it’s in learning.

How do you resolve the ADHD problem of reading a paragraph while another whole internal conversation is going on in your head with a soundtrack of a song you heard on the radio three hours ago? I look back and don’t remember anything I just read.

Audiobooks are amazing. I'm a lifelong reader, but I now consume way more books than I ever would have had time to!!

I love this! And am surprised… I recently thought I need to cut back on audio books and read more physical books because I “feel like” reading vs listening is “harder” and therefore “better”…

Curious if there is a difference in the brain activity between people who have inner dialogue voice and those who do not when they read? 🤔

Wouldn’t the fMRI comprehension study miss the real world variable of distraction/multitasking that some ppl are alluding to in these comments?

I have aphantasia, so cannot conjure pictures / sounds / smells etc in my brain at will. Listening to a good narrator of an audio book gives me voices for the characters that I could not conjure on my own.

I love audiobooks, but when I want my students to read a book, I want them to read it. Bc they need to learn how to sight read (?)/ better their literacy. Also a text is easier tonwork with than an audio recording.

Does this mean we process narrative text differently? I notice that I don't really "see" words with narrative text, after a couple paragraphs it becomes a sort of video in my head. Even for non-fiction. Academic texts don't have that same effect.

It actually makes a lot of sense when you consider that for the vast majority of human history information was shared orally because there were no writing systems, or if there were only a small number of people had access to them. We evolved to hear stories. Reading them is very recent.

as a neuro girl who wants to do more scicomm, i love watching your content for examples of how to break down technical terms like semantic representation. plus affirming that neuroscience doesn’t tell you the “right” way to do certain things. if you like audiobooks, that’s good enough! 🥰

I'm a working mom of 4 kids. I have a 90 minute commute one way, so I spend 3 hours a day in my car. I don't have a ton of time to read. Glad to hear audio books are an acceptable form of "reading."

why is it way easier to comprehend text than audio? for me, reading is easy and fast but hearing is kind of like soup

Also a lot of people want to say that it’s not “reading” but “listening” because “reading” has a specific meaning but, ”do you read me?” One can read a room, a situation. To “read” is often used to describe the discovery of information by a variety of means, including by listening.

Listening to an audiobook is considerably slower than reading. That must influence the way you process the serial stream of information listening or reading basicly is. Or not?

As a dyslexic I just wouldn’t read without audiobooks. I’m also tired of people grasping for a reason why audiobooks isn’t as good as physical. It falls into the realm of bigotry and elitism

Is neuroscience the right discipline to answer this question? i have an experiment i’d be interested in seeing performed that focuses on tone.
