@mrs.yang_reads: Elsie Silver describing a character as dirty for being dark is what it is and I will continue to focus on books that describe it as it is. Beautiful. #blackbooktok #BookTok #bookcontent #reading #blackbooks

everyone is screaming "context! she is talking about a white person's tan". As a white person that can't tan properly, i wouldn't want people calling my tan dirty either! this is a clear conversation in intention vs impact. it may be have been an "innocent" description but it has an negative impact.

I’m not a writer but in no way does calling someone dirty sound good unless you’re being disrespectful.

I thought comparing someone’s skin to dirt being wrong was common knowledge? What happened to comparing it to things that are pretty or fun?

Times it's ok to describe your character's skin as dirty - they fell into a mud puddle. That's it.

I feel like the line is being taken out of context... She describes a blonde haired boy with a tan whose knees are darker than the rest of his body so it almost looks dirty… if she was literally describing a BLACK darker skin person then yes it would be offensive but that is not at all what the text says.

As a beginning writer, I've been researching about how to describe characters, and I've seen people talking about what not to do or what to avoid, but very little talk about how to do it properly. I wanted to know your opinion, because I've seen some people saying not to describe black skin characters by associating it with food (chocolate, coffee, etc.)How should the writers describe black skin without being offensive or insensitive?

I haven’t read any of her books, but I’ve seen enough authors and artists struggle with cancel culture. I’m not discounting anyone’s feelings here, just want to offer another perspective. No author would purposely create a problem for themselves, especially over something that is such a sensitive topic. I think artists in general struggle constantly trying to balance the line between what is and isn’t politically correct. Anything, at any time, can be taken out of context and an issue can always be found if you look hard enough. Writers use a lot of imagery. And sometimes there are only so many ways to describe features in ways the mass audience can comprehend. Sometimes writers have to go with the simpler way of explaining the imagery they’re trying to create. Could she have said “he was so tan he looked amber? Or like smoky topaz? That sounds ridiculous and a lot of people wouldn’t even know what that means. She could have said “his knees were so dirty and hard worked to the point the skin looked like worn leather.” But that would have been shamed upon too. Idk. I think if we continue on with the cancel culture thing, we’ll never heal or evolve from the past that still plagues us. The past that we still let haunt us. But we are a new generation. We can literally reshape society to be exactly what we want it to be. With us, our kids, our grand kids. We can choose to teach love and acceptance, without divide. But if we keep prolonging the problems we so desperately want to eradicate, we’ll never get there. Healing doesn’t mean we forget or ignore it happened, healing means we take the power of the narrative back. We can’t control history, but we can control the future.
