On 11 September, Saudi Arabia's energy ministry said the East-West Pipeline had been shut as a precaution, a day after drones hit it in the Riyadh and Madinah regions. The kingdom says the drones came from Iraq. Iraq confirmed the launch site in Maysan and dismissed a commander. Iran-aligned militias denied any role. No group has claimed responsibility. The pipeline matters because it is the way round the Strait of Hormuz: 1,200 km to Yanbu on the Red Sea, where Saudi crude has been leaving since the strait closed in March. From Yanbu the oil goes south through Bab el-Mandeb to Asia, or north through Egypt to Europe. The south route has been under a Houthi blockade on Saudi shipping since 20 July. On 11 September the Houthis took Perim island, in the middle of Bab el-Mandeb, and their spokesman said the sea is safe for everyone except Saudi ships. Saudi exports to Asia fell from 3.4 million barrels a day in June to 128,000 in August, by Kpler's count. In the Gulf, Aramco began loading again in August. On 31 August two tankers carrying Saudi crude were hit as they left Hormuz. Two sailors died. Riyadh blamed Iran. Kpler estimates Saudi crude exports at 3.2 million barrels a day in August, the lowest in 13 years. The ministry says further developments will be announced in due course. Its statement gives no date for the pipeline. The film counts the three ways out on a relief map, with the shipping lanes drawn from OpenStreetMap traffic-separation schemes and the SUMED pipeline across Egypt. Where a lane is sketched rather than mapped, the ground says so. Sources: Saudi Press Agency, Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs via Al Jazeera, Reuters, AP, Kpler via Al-Monitor and CNBC. #SaudiArabia #Hormuz #RedSea #Oil #Aramco
