If you have these issues you’re probably going to gain 1-1.5cn by doing this stuff for a few months, as well as improve your posture, get rid of ankle/knee pain and improve bias toward things like a lateral pelvic tilt, which could help to restore further height if you’re dealing with uneven leg length and scoliosis. The logic is simple, at least in my head, as one of the biggest reasons so many people struggle with foot problems today is that modern life has gradually taken the work away from the foot itself. Most people spend nearly all day in supportive shoes, sliders, or cushioned soles, and over time that can reduce how much the intrinsic foot muscles are asked to contribute during walking. Those muscles help support the arch and regulate how the foot handles load, so when they do less, the foot may become less efficient at sharing force across the structures that are supposed to absorb it. Research does point in that general direction: intrinsic foot muscles play an important role in arch function, conventional modern footwear has been associated with weaker intrinsic foot muscles and lower foot stiffness, and minimal footwear interventions have been shown to increase foot muscle strength and size over time. That is why I think gradual barefoot walking, when there is no active flare, can be a useful part of improving foot function. Not as an aggressive all-at-once switch, but as a progressive way to wake the foot back up, improve muscle engagement, and restore some of the natural strength and load sharing that constant cushioning may blunt. I would still combine that with direct foot exercises, calf work, and sensible progression, but the core idea is simple: sometimes the answer is not endlessly protecting the foot from work, but helping it relearn how to do its share of the work again. A randomized trial in persistent heel pain also found better short term improvements with a progressive barefoot walking program than with a shod walking program, which at least gives some clinical support to the broader idea. And here’s some papers I’ve read as of recent that helped to res,my cement these beliefs: 1- Ridge ST et al. Walking in Minimalist Shoes Is Effective for Strengthening Foot Muscles. PMID: 30113521. This paper explicitly states that supportive footwear may reduce the foot muscles’ role in locomotion and tested minimalist walking as a strengthening strategy. 2- Holowka NB et al. Foot strength and stiffness are related to footwear use in a comparison of minimally- vs. conventionally-shod populations. PMID: 29487321. This study found larger intrinsic foot muscles and greater longitudinal arch stiffness in minimally shod individuals. 3- Curtis R et al. Daily activity in minimal footwear increases foot strength. PMID: 34545114. This study reported substantial foot strength gains after six months of daily activity in minimal footwear. 4- Xu J et al. The Effects of Minimalist Shoes on Plantar Intrinsic Foot Muscle Size and Strength: A Systematic Review. PMID: 35878616. The review found increases in intrinsic foot muscle strength and size across the included intervention studies. 5- Reinstein M et al. Barefoot walking is beneficial for individuals with persistent plantar heel pain: A single-blind randomized controlled trial. PMID: 38118297. This gives at least some direct clinical support to the idea that progressive barefoot walking can be beneficial in the right context.
