I shared this comparison to show how fundamentally different the worldview of a 6-year-old is from that of a teenager. The world of a 6-year-old is concrete, literal, and rule-bound. They rely on predictable structure and prefer everyone to follow the rules. This is why young children often “police” classmates about fairness, turns, or gender stereotypes. When someone breaks a rule or gets something they don’t, it can feel to them like the whole system has fallen apart. They aren’t being dramatic; they’re simply not yet able to see gray areas, make exceptions, or imagine alternative explanations. A 6-year-old upset about fairness is trying to create order in a world that still feels big and unpredictable. The world of a 13-year-old is abstract, hypothetical, and full of possibility. They can imagine futures, question rules, see shades of gray, and think about thinking. This is why teens debate everything—from curfews to global issues. Their mind is finally capable of abstraction, and they’re taking it out for a test-drive. They’re experimenting with ideas, imagining possibilities, and trying to reconcile contradictions in the world around them. Their questioning and intensity reflect cognitive growth, not defiance. Curiosity-based prompts like “Tell me how you’re seeing this” offer a window into their inner world.
