Used to work retail. This isn't new. People have been doing this for years. It's been really bad since 2020. If you don't need your receipt and the store's system doesn't give an option to the cashier to NOT print one, Please tear your recipt virtically making sure to tear through any barcodes on the recipt.

Ironically a lot of places I know will refund only towards the way it was purchased, since most people now use cards it’s kind of a bad scam now a days

chances are it was refunded to the purchaser's credit card, otherwise cash limit goes to a gift card
