@surfsimply: Want to generate speed on your backside? There are two main aspects a surfer should consider to efficiently generate speed by pumping: Rail Engagement and Compression/Extension. When pumping on the backside, it is much more important to rotate the upper body and bring the trailing arm forward. On our backside, we use our heels to pull our board up and down the face of the wave, unlike the toes on our forehand which offer much more nuanced control. 1 - Compress over the front foot and begin to apply weight to the heels, around the mid part of the face. 2 - As the board goes through the apex of the turn, begin to extend and shift weight onto the back foot. Make sure the trailing arm comes forward and up towards the lip of the wave. 3 - Allow the board to come to the top of the wave, release weight from the heel rail while keeping weight on the back foot. This will cause the nose to drop. 4 - Shift the weight forward and again compress over the front foot. Repeat the cycle. Pumping General Rule: It's more about the board traveling up and down the face, rising and falling, and less about throwing arms around.
