@melissadivaristhompson: Withdrawers aren’t distant — they’re overwhelmed. And once you understand the nervous system behind the shutdown, everything changes. Save this for later + send it to your partner if this is your dynamic. Secure connection is a skill — not something you “should already know.” 💙 #relationships #withdrawer #pursuerwithdrawer #attachmentstyle #couplestherapy
I literally can't speak. Like the words just get stuck.

This hits IF the person who withdraws is willing to return to discuss the situation…many withdraw and then expect the issue to just die on its own leaving the other person never feeling heard.

It’s protecting my peace. And it’s also so I don’t say something that I will regret.

Again, this avoids accountability. In any functioning relationship, both people have to be willing to change for the sake of the relationship. Hard conversations are uncomfortable, but they’re part of growing up and being an adult. If your boss tells you you’re not doing a good job and you stay silent or refuse to engage, do you expect them to keep trying to appease you or to replace you with someone who will do the job? Relationships work the same way. If you consistently avoid communication, then you are part of the problem. I understand that this behavior often comes from trauma, and that matters but you aren’t the only person who has had to work through difficult experiences.
At some point, being in a relationship means considering the person you love, not just protecting yourself.

I have no problem with conflict, I have a problem with unkind, hostile communication. I withdrawal on purpose because you don't get access to me if you can't be respectful and curious. Boundaries are wonderful like that 😊

Yes all this but ALSO withdrawing isn't the first reaction. It typically comes after several attempts to be heard without success.

I’m quiet because anytime I open my mouth I’m the problem. So I choose not to talk at all. It’s survival.
