@blooddocdad: 1. If a baby becomes infected with hepatitis B, there’s a 90% chance that they will develop chronic hepatitis B. This will increase their risk of lifelong cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma 2. Newborns are highly vulnerable and by getting the birth dose of hepatitis B, immune protection starts within the first few hours of life 3. Since universal Hepatitis B birth dose vaccination started in 1991 the acute hepatitis B infection in children fell by 99% 4. Many adults with hepatitis B have no symptoms and don’t know they are infected. The birth dose protects babies who are exposed to close household contacts 5. Hepatitis B infection can be reactivated in the future due to immunosuppresion or chemotherapy 6. The hepatitis B vaccine has been studied for decades with extensive research
How are babies whose mothers don’t have hep b getting it?

I don’t think they said anything about never vaccinating for hep b. It’s just not necessary 39 seconds after they’ve been born. They test the mom prior to birth anyway.

You as a parent should do your research and make the decision to give any vaccine to your precious babies. It should be an option not a requirement. Good or bad, you take their risk for your most important gifts.

For mothers testing negative who are caring for their own newborns, I don’t feel it’s necessary at 24 HOURS OLD. It can absolutely wait until the baby is at least weighing more than 10lbs. Used needles and infected bodily fluids are not a concern at my house. Idk about yall though.

After working in maternity for the last eight years, I can say this is a sad day for all of us. We are just shaking our heads, not in disbelief because we knew this would happen, but in sadness for any baby whose parents will fall for this brutal misconception.

But how would a newborn even contract hep B if the mother doesn’t have it? My understanding is the vast majority of newborns don’t need it. It’s something they can get later when theyre about to become sexually active

are we this upset about all the other vaccinations not being given at birth? the recommendation is pushed to 2 months. you’re saying the risk for Hep B is so high, it can’t wait 8-10 weeks like the others? i’m genuinely confused.

What pisses me off is that people are acting like this is a “win” for the anti-vaxers, which makes no sense cause it was already a choice from the beginning. I just hope insurance will still cover it for those who CHOOSE to still get it 🙃
